The mission of the BABY LEARNS CHINESE series is to create a happy, stimulating and encouraging environment for children to learn to speak and read Chinese during the period in which learning is most efficient in a child's life (age 0-6).
About the Author of Baby Learns Chinese Yama brings a wealth of personal and business experience as Founder of Chinese for Kids, Ltd., which created Baby Learns Chinese DVD series. She grew up in Hong Kong and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from University of California, Berkeley and earned a Master of Business Administration from The University of Chicago.
She has always had an appreciation for learning multiple languages. After reading the book, How to Teach Your Baby to Read, Yama started using the flash card method to teach her twin boys how to recognize Chinese characters and English words. They were almost 1 year old at that time. She found
that even though her boys could not speak yet, they were able to recognize the Chinese characters after seeing them a few times. It actually took them longer to learn English words. She thinks her boys found Chinese characters easier to remember because Chinese words are inherently images. To them,
each Chinese character is a picture that represents a certain object. It doesn't matter how complicated the Chinese characters is, as long as the character relates to things that they are familiar with in every day life, they had no problems recognizing and reading the characters. By age 2, her boys were able to recognize about 100 Chinese characters.
