The book is a collection of Zhu Rongji’s answers to the questions of journalists from home and abroad and his speeches delivered abroad when he served as Vice Premier and Premier of the State Council. It consists of four parts: answers to the questions on the five press conferences during the 9th National People’s Congress; interviews with foreign journalists; speeches delivered abroad and answers to the questions; and the interviews with the accompanying Hong Kong journalists during his visits to other countries. Among them the full text of the interviews with foreign journalists and the speeches delivered abroad and answers to the questions were never published before in China. The book is a faithful depiction of the major events in China and policies adopted by the Chinese government, including the measures taken to maintain a steady and speedy growth of economy such as those to deal with the impact of the financial crisis in the Southeast Asia, to deepen the reforms of grain circulation, investment and financing and taxation and finance, to curb inflation and to regulate the stock market, policies to promote the socialist democracy and protect human rights and reforms of housing, medical service and cultural system, the “one country, two systems” policy carried out in Hong Kong and Macao to promote the peaceful reunification of the motherland, and the efforts made by the Chinese government to enter the WTO and enhance the mutual trust and cooperation with other countries.
